How Do You Determine a High-Quality Backlink?

Backlinks – links from other websites to your business’s website – are the most effective method of improving SEO rankings. However, not all backlinks rank equally. In some cases, backlinks won’t help you at all – and in some cases they might even be detrimental. The key is to concentrate on acquiring high-quality backlinks.

You cannot expect each of your backlinks to meet all of these criteria, and having a backlink that does not fulfill every criterion does not mean it is low quality. As obvious as it seems, a high quality backlink will come from a high quality site. A high quality site is likely to also be very trustworthy.

In order to determine the trustworthiness of a website, search engines look for trusted seed sites (for example, Wikipedia, BBC, The Huffington Post, etc.), which they can be sure are high quality and are hard to get links from.

A site with fewer links away from one of the seed sites has a higher TrustRank, and the quality of the link from that site is higher.

4. Linking to it Sends Traffic

This aspect of backlinks is often overlooked. Prior to search engines using links to determine their algorithms, links were used to add value to a page.

These links pointed users to resources relevant to the topic of that page. Visitors still click on these links as often as they did when the internet first started, and having a link in a prominent position on a highly visited page adds to its worth since it will draw a continuous stream of targeted visitors to your website despite its ranking.

4. The Anchor Link Text used matches the Phrase/Term/Synonym

Having the clickable text of the link match or be similar to the keywords you are trying to rank for will increase the quality of a backlink.

If you have lots of incoming links that use exactly the same anchor link text, nonetheless, it looks unnatural, so make sure you mix it up a little. If you use anchor texts that are natural and make sense, you should be good to go.

5. No Reciprocity

Link exchanges were widely abused in the past, resulting in a reduction in the value of reciprocal links. It’s worth noting that reciprocal links still have value.

You don’t necessarily risk a penalty for using them. However, if you’re hoping to get a high-quality link, you should link to a page that isn’t linked from your own site.

6. Not Easily Procured

A backlink that is easy to acquire will likely have less value.

If you can get it in a couple of minutes, or with just a couple of clicks, a lot of people have already done it before you, and even more will do it after you – including your competitors if they review your site’s backlink profile.

Your competitor’s replication of one of your links has neutralized the value of that link for you in the head-to-head SEO contest you are involved in with that competitor.
