How To Get Started With e-Commerce Business Site

Do you know that since 2019 due to the outbreak of Covid-19 there has been a tremendous increase in the number of online consumers?

Statistics state that the number of online shoppers has increased from 150 million last year to 190 million. And is expected to jump to 500 million in the next 5 years.

So, if you are not selling your product online you would be left behind in today’s digital world and all your customers would be tapped by your competitors. So why not start selling online by building your online store?

After helping the clients in setting up their eCommerce site we have decided to create a guide on How to get started with your eCommerce store.

Before setting up your site, you need to decide the platform you want to sell your product on. Many sellers make the mistake of not choosing the right selling platform. The exclusive eCommerce platforms we recommend are Shopify and WordPress + WooCommerce.

Shopify is a fully hosted eCommerce solution that starts at ₹750/month. It’s a simple solution where you have to login and start selling. However, Shopify can get quite expensive as whichever plan you may choose, you would have to pay extra transaction fees if your payment provider is not Shopify Payments. And if you want extra features such as adding a loyalty program, advanced order tracking, etc; you will need to pay extra for it.

Whereas WordPress + WooCommerce requires some basic set-ups in the beginning but is useful in the long run.

So here are the 6 steps to set up an online store in WordPress using WooCommerce –

Step 1: Choose Your Domain Name And Hosting Provider

To set up an online store you will need a domain name and hosting provider. A domain name is what users will enter into the address bar of the browser to access your website.

While WordPress is free, you’ll need to pay for your domain name, the pricing of which changes based on the extension that you decide. The cost is worth it because having your own domain name (i.e. www.skillwise.pro) sounds more professional than having your name on someone else’s domain (i.e. skillwise.wordpress.com).

Web hosting is a place where your eCommerce website is stored on the internet. It’s similar to renting a space on a physical server where you can store all the files and data necessary for proper functioning of your website.

There are many domains and hosting providers from where you can host your website like –

Step 2. Installing WordPress

Once you have chosen your domain name and hosting provider, the next step is to install WordPress. You can install WordPress in two ways:

1. One-click Install:

In one-click install, you get your WordPress site hosted from the same provider. In this, you just have to click the button “Install WordPress” to get it installed through your hosting dashboard.

2. Manually Downloading WordPress:

To manually install WordPress you need to have an FTP client, a database setup through cPanel or phpMyAdmin, and access to your hosting account. This is quite complicated and is recommended for advanced users only.

Step 3. Setting up Your WooCommerce Store

WooCommerce is the best online store builder platform built on WordPress, which is customizable and where you can sell any type of products you want.

You need to install and activate the WooCommerce plugin. For that go to Plugins » Add New and search for WooCommerce. From the search results, click on the Install Now button WooCommerce. You can activate the plugin once it is installed.

From the search results, click on the Install Now button WooCommerce.

Step 4. Choose A Theme

Each theme of WordPress has its unique look and controls how your site would look. The theme would control how your products will be displayed on the site.

However not all the themes are made for the eCommerce site. WooCommerce provides many paid as well as free themes for an eCommerce Site. Choose the one which goes best with your business.

Step 5: Adding Products To Your Store

Once you have activated the eCommerce plugin you can start adding the product pages.

To add the products you need to visit Products » Add New to add a new product.

Make sure that every product you add must have the following features:

  • Product Name
  • Price
  • Image
  • Brief description

Step 6. Setting Up Payments For Your eCommerce Site

Your eCommerce site needs a means of receiving payments from the buyers. So the next step is to set up payment gateways in your store to accept online payments.

WooCommerce offers various payment gateways which you can easily set up. Go to the WooCommerce » Settings page and switch to the ‘Payments’ tab where you can select from Bank Transfers, Check payments, Cash on Delivery, or PayPal Standard.

For each payment gateway, you can click on the Set up button and provide the required information to get started.
